How to Play Nine Men’s Morris

The game is played on a board with 24 points connected by lines. Each player has nine pieces.

Phase 1: Placing Pieces

• Players take turns placing pieces on empty points
• Form a line of three (a "mill") to remove an opponent’s piece

Phase 2: Moving Pieces

• Once all pieces are placed, players move pieces to adjacent points
• Continue forming mills to capture opponent pieces

Phase 3: Flying

• When a player has only 3 pieces left, they can move to any open point

Win the game by reducing your opponent to two pieces or blocking all their moves.

Nine Men’s Morris has been found carved into stone in ancient Roman sites and medieval churches. One of the most famous boards appears on the Gokstad Viking ship, where it was carved alongside a tafl board.
